It's a HD re-release of BG (and Tales of the Sword Coast), to be followed by BG2 (including Throne of Bhaal) several months later. The games will have higher-res graphics, a better UI and more customisation options (as BG1 will run on an updated Throne of Bhaal engine, meaning the superior journal/map/annotation/inventory options from that game will be available in BG1). It'll still use the AD&D 2E rules and will still be in 2D (no 3D, aside possibly from the 3D spell effects they already had in the sequels).
They're keeping the original sound, artwork, VOs and music. There will be some new content (from the original BG writers) in the form of new characters (with new VOs). I believe adding new material like this means they can re-register the copyright for the games as new titles rather than just re-releases, which is legally beneficial for them. However, I get the impression that the new characters will be pretty minor (no new companions from the sound of it).
At the moment, the new versions are fully compatible with old save games and mods.
So far only a PC version has been confirmed.
