It's what they call a combat rpg - there's not much role-playing to it, admittedly. Legolas Send a noteboard - 05/05/2012 05:27:39 PM
And would it be worth picking up this game without having played the others? I've heard Diablo 2 mentioned a lot but know absolutely nothing about it, so I'm kinda curious. It's nearly summer after all.

Except to the extent that you make your character as badass a barbarian/sorcerer/monk/... as possible, anyway. In terms of atmosphere and challenging fights, Diablo II was a superb game, but the story is limited, quests are highly straightforward, and just to make clear where the focus lies, you get to replay the exact same plot and the (more or less - they're randomly generated based on fixed patterns) exact same locations three times in a row with every character, each time significantly harder than the last (even taking into account that your character is many levels more powerful).

Also, you don't need to have played the other games I suppose, but you'd be wise to read at least some strategy advice on how to build your character. If it's anything like Diablo II, you may get away with randomly developing stats and abilities as you please during the first playthrough, but you won't stand a chance in hell (pun intended) on the second, nevermind the third. Every class should have a good number of possible ways to play, but having a viable character on the higher levels requires planning ahead and focusing on a handful of abilities, rather than trying to do a little of everything.

I did the beta weekend. It's okay. Not something I'd pay $50 for. *NM* - 01/05/2012 08:50:44 PM 823 Views
My reaction as well. *NM* - 04/05/2012 07:04:02 PM 574 Views
You mean Torchlight II + $30? *NM* - 02/05/2012 03:41:57 AM 575 Views
It felt like Diablo 2 with a less compelling art style. - 02/05/2012 07:33:55 PM 1114 Views
Goddamn, we're a cynical bunch. Good luck having any fun on this forum! *NM* - 05/05/2012 04:28:58 AM 594 Views
No, we're just rational. If you like dungeon crawlers, get Torchlight 2 and save money. *NM* - 07/05/2012 11:09:38 AM 579 Views
I don't know about Torchlight 2 (or Diablo III), but... - 07/05/2012 10:23:08 PM 1185 Views
I would agree with that. - 08/05/2012 01:44:04 AM 1159 Views

If it's anything like Diablo II, you don't need anything to get into it. - 05/05/2012 07:31:19 AM 1100 Views

Character building is completely differnt from Diablo 2. It should be much harder to screw yourself. - 05/05/2012 07:47:30 PM 1072 Views
Aww. They keep dumbing things down for us. How sweet. - 05/05/2012 09:49:52 PM 1078 Views

I'm sorry, that was inaccurate. - 08/05/2012 04:06:17 AM 1179 Views
