Combat is very, very much like Baldur's Gate in that you click on the guy you want to kill, and your character and allies will just start swinging.
Different in that there are many special abilities to use, so combat doesn't get boring.
I'm not a big fan of the Gambits (Tactics, whatever), though. The game forces you to only control one character, fair enough. But in the beginning, everyone... you know what, I'm going to make a new post about this.
