Just ... just one thing. Please don't tell me you're referring to X as the "roots" of anything to do with Final Fantasy. :p
X obviously was not the beginning of Final Fantasy in any way. However, I would argue that it is a fairly traditional Final Fantasy game. It had a Fantasy setting, turn-based battle system, save-the-world emotional plot, etc. XII, on the other hand, tried a lot of new things. It had a very political storyline that was much less epic in scope, it didn't have nearly the same character emphasis, t(here were no "lead" characters at all, really), and the battle system played more like an MMO than anything else. No turn-base, introduced the tank-and-spank mentality, etc.
Anyway, I'm not sure I really argued the point successfully, but I definitely think that X was much more representative of a standard Final Fantasy game than XII was.

X was certainly more in the traditional style than XII was, no doubt about that. Though one thing I missed from X that all the previous ones had was the open, explorable world.
You could argue that the previous games were mostly the illusion of an open world until the end, though. The games had open worlds, but various things (usually obstacles that could later be crossed with new transportation) kept the player going in one general direction most of the time, until near the end when everything would open up. VII, VIII, and IX are certainly like that. V and VI were a little more open though. Still, I missed it in X.

I'm not excited, because I didn't like 12 (but I'll still buy it)
