I so wanted to like the game. Real economy, everyone in a single world, actual politics and intrigue. . .everything about it is awesome. Except for the actual gameplay, which is unimaginably tedious and unfriendly to the new player. There's really just nothing you can do on your own, so you have to find a guild willing to hand a bunch of stuff your way. Moreover, it's impossible to catch up to people who have been playing for a long time, due to skill training being based on real time.
I agree that it's not great for the average new player, although supposedly they've improved that in the last couple of patches (can't really comment, not being new anymore...) But yeah, to really get into the game you need a good corp. Thankfully I found one by the end of my 2 week trial period!
And yes, it's impossible to have as broad a skill set as players who have been playing for years, however it doesn't take that long (in EVE terms, which I admit promotes pretty long term thinking) to be as good as any goddamn player in the universe in a specialised area. Of course you'll lack their gameplay experience, something most relevant in PvP combat, but the same can be said about any game really.
Every other MMO out there focuses on making each player unique, and powerful. Most of them succeed at that, too. In Eve, the only way to feel that way is to break into someone's real life house with a gun, and force them to log on and transfer their titan to you. 
Nah, a 1 month old player can make billions running scams if they know what they're doing (caveat: I don't so don't bother asking
). And believe me, the rush you get from PvP in EVE (especially when you, y'know, win) gives you that feeling of power. Big time. And if you lose? Well you really feel like you've lost something, which isn't to everyone's taste but I love it.Anyway. Eve is awesome, and I love reading about the reports, battles, and major coups that come out of it. I just can't stand actually PLAYING it.
Yeah, I love all of that stuff. And fair play, EVE certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea. It's very different from pretty much anything else out there and not what people (especially those who have played other MMOs) are used to. There's certainly nothing wrong with finding it boring!
