This is why it's ironic that EA mocked the idea of Religious games, and used it as PR for the game.

Like, the main character has his dead wife's crucifix. He can shoot out cross-shaped blasts with it. If he upgrades it (with "souls," which he gets from fighting enemies...), it can shoot out multiple blasts of light.
At various points you meet people (historical figures, and others) whom you can "Save" or "condemn," and then get the relevant upgrade point bonus (there are two tech trees, one for light and one for dark). Like, I believe Pontius Pilate is one of the first ones you meet.
One of the collectibles are "Judas Coins"
It's more just that it's surreal to see elements of a religion I grew up with in video game form.

Christian games typically get a bad wrap. We had those iffy black-cartridged NES games back in the day, and more recent Left Behind games to make fun of. Most of the stuff you've listed from DI sound like something that would earn mass ridicule if found elsewhere. IIRC, EA put out some faux product ad for something called "Wii Pray." It was a cross-shaped controller, and it made this the Christian family look like loons as they joyfully played the game.
I'm a Christian (read: not Catholic) who reads the Bible, is active in church, etc, and also happens to play games. The nudity (and lack of 360) will keep me away from this game, but it doesn't sound like I'm missing much in the first place. (then again, I'm a closet PC gaming snob) I just can't help but smirk at the idea of Judas Coins and the crucifix blaster.
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.

It was the Christian imagery that turned me off, oddly enough

I think it's that the game takes itself so seriously. I LOVE Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter
