Dante is the main character, and his beloved has been taken to hell for reasons which cannot be revealed.

I knew something very, very fundamentally wrong would happen when someone appeared to make a game out of Dante, but seriously? That is the silliest twist ... . I lack words.

He follows her using his aggressive combat abilities. His main weapon is a death's scythe, which makes for beautiful combos. He also has a holy cross that can be upgraded but generally gives off holy light and can perform mass damage. It's incredibly fun to use, and very powerful.

It sounds hilarious, but I am not sure I would be able to take it seriously.

You have relics that can make you stronger, and the option to upgrade to either good or evil ways. There are choices to absolve or punish people, and both ways alter your alignment. You also meet history's evil people in hell and you can either punish them or absolve them, which places you in interesting moral conundrums.

I can only imagine.

The monsters are creepy, and the game can be rather frightening. They did a good job of creating hell, and you'll be reminded of Fear or Doom 3 if you play the game - especially at night by yourself.

Will you be reminded of Dante's "Inferno" at all? At any time?

Well someone clearly read the Divine Comedy and looked at the nine circles of hell. They picked out all the major people he encountered there, and some of the more grotesque events he saw, and made a game out of it. If you're seriously into his original works, I think you might just have a fit if you play this game.

I was glad to see that Lucifer was trapped in a lake of ice at the end of the game, but after fighting him with my scythe that I took from death's dead hands, and using my cross of empowered holy energy, I couldn't help but chuckle.

Is Virgil in it at all?
I ask, you will understand, not because I have any plans of ever playing the game (it sounds like it will be too scary for me, not to mention I would have a (possibly several) fit(s)), but because I now feel what I can only describe as a morbid curiosity.

He is :) Virgil follows you through the game as your guide. He's a man in the form of a blue spirit. He tells you about each circle and sometimes gives you things, like artifacts. He then vanished into little tiny motes and reappears a few hours later when you reach something pivotal.
