Not a DRM problem after all, but a clock problem. Apparently the fat ps3s think that this is a leap year and tried to adjust accordingly, royally screwing themselves in the process.

It does, however, reinforce how annoying it is to have your games attempt to connect to the interweb when there's no need to. I became aware of the problem attempting to play darksiders last night, and got the "cannot save trophies data" before I had even gotten past teh intrto screens. I sometimes do play the ps3 with my wifi turned off and haven't come across this problem before.
