I am trying to imagine Alfred the Great's reaction to the ascension of the latest monarch of the kingdom he created. I think once he got past the cultural barriers and whatnot to comprehend the scope of Elizabeth's problems, he'd give up the unification of England as a bad job and sign up with Uhtred to go viking.
