... but then on the other, I walk into bookstores and see shelves upon shelves upon shelves of fantasy/werewolf/vampire/etc. stories marketed as YA, and somehow I have zero desire to go out there and try any of them.

Even though I'm sure there must be some really good books somewhere on those shelves - looking back to when I was reading books written for teenagers, I encountered a good number of books that were seriously excellent by any standard, some of them better even than HP. No doubt people are still writing books like that, it's just hard to tell them from all the chaff.
