This sorry of thinking needs to be challenged and the centrist are the only ones that can do it.

Means there is more room in the center. But it also means that the Center is further away from both the Far Left and the Far Right. So it becomes much harder for people on the Left/Right to broach the middle. You are right that Centrists need to be the ones to broach the gap.
