Everyone thinks they are a lot closer to moderate than their opponents do, because in the context of contemporary discussion, moderate has a connotation of reasonable or normal, and that's what each person thinks of his own beliefs, because that's why he holds them. The only people who willingly take on an extremist label are posers or grudgingly accepting the popular label of their position for the sake of clarity.
