If it was the most powerful storm in Atlantic history, why on Earth would I not want to know that? There was no way to know precisely which path it would take, so no real way to guess what strength it would keep or not.
Which is why I watch precisely zero 24/7 news. I understand your point - I'm as jaded as it gets re: sensational angles and ratings. But I'm also not remotely content to be told anything other than the facts as they occur, even if the track, power, etc can all change.
