If the jobs that require actual skills like writing and directing are not rare skills it all comes down to who get selected by the power brokers which makes it much more like communism than capitalism. You get famous if you get cast in the correct role. Yes it does take some talent but looks are more important and fame trumps all. Producers and directors do live and die to some degree by how much money their movies makes but even that is usually driven by their fame and the projects they are selected for.
