At least in US courts don't like changing things once the kids have settled. Try to get them in settled with you and you have a much better chance of keeping them for the majority of time. If they are in school even better.

For one, we will probably try to avoid the courts, since it is not required as long as we can agree. Secondly, the standard here is to split the time in some way, either one week each or some other schedule we can agree on. Thirdly, both of us want the other one to be an important part in the kids' lives.

And they're quite small (2 in January and 5 in February), the younger one just starting kindergarten. We started on a schedule yesterday. The first draft feels messy, but we both want to see the kids at least every other day and have activities at times with no kindergarten. So as of now no more regularity that this schedule will allow. I'm sure it'll be different in a year or two, but then again I talked to a friend yesterday who is now 4 years separated, and they still have to talk through every week due to irregular shift work among other things

Aka not the courts, but something one who has experience with this and knows the paperwork and both of you can make a default schedule but also have rules in it on how to pivot and give the other parent forewarning when the schedule needs to change due to temporary changing circumstances?
