The yogh was a real letter, but "insular G" is just a variant. Also the 7 isn't a letter at all as it stands for "and" (note I mentioned it in my earlier response), just like the shorthand "that" which the article mentions.

Notice how the 7, & and "long s", unlike the other examples, don't have majuscule forms? Yeah, I did too. It's because they're not letters!

Of course, the "ng" is just someone's attempt at a letter that failed, so I don't consider it a letter any more than if I created some fake letter and tried to get people to adopt it but they didn't.

If enough people use it then your letter will become accepted/real.

I have to take issue with the & and the "long s" - 18/01/2018 07:28:09 PM 440 Views
Ok, let's define what a letter is. - 18/01/2018 11:25:22 PM 486 Views
Yes, the long "s" is just a variant. It didn't have a name in Old English. - 19/01/2018 03:39:51 PM 635 Views
I don't think not having a name in Old English matters here. - 19/01/2018 05:05:47 PM 734 Views
I think it does, quite definitively. - 20/01/2018 08:46:24 PM 445 Views
