But from how I understand it (which, obviously, is limited by being much younger and not even American to boot), those were small numbers of extremists, and even if you consider the wider group of protesters against the draft and the Vietnam war, they were still a minority even within the Democratic party? With the governing wing of the Democrats not remotely as hostile to the Republicans as the parties are today?
It's not so much that I really expect things to come to violence, as that I continue to see things going only further and further downhill. Either you reverse that trend, or, well, I don't really know what else, but sooner or later something's got to give?
