Martin seems incapable of finishing the series. He's 70 years old, he was morbidly obese for a long time (though he seems to have slimmed down a bit), and the odds are he will pull a Robert Jordan on us, though since HBO is going to give us the ending we want in April of this year, it won't matter.

There is a book series called A Song of Ice and Fire.
There is a TV series called Game of Thrones.

Both matter. Even if Martin dies before completing the series, that isn't to say it will remain unresolved. Depending on the monetary value, a new author could complete the series.
