And in the modern social justice era being a victim is the most honored goal you can achieve. Victims are exempt from normal social rules and almost any behavior can be excused as long as you have a enough victim points. You get points for being anything other than a straight white male over the age of thirty. They can't be the victim because history.
Everyone is a victim in their own story ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and there is a corollary where everyone is a hero in their own story.
Yet there is a transition point, where we FEEL we are more a hero or a victim in specific moments of space time due to things like arousal, and what is happening in the environment currently. Whenever we feel outraged, offense, loathing, revulsion, and a couple other "complex emotions" (complex being it is a layering of two or more emotions.) There is a switch that goes on, an arousal state switch and we enter a black and white thinking state, we are now DEFINITELY the victim or DEFINITELY the hero in this moment of space time. All nuance, all complexity, is thrown out of the window for we are emotionally triggered.
I think this is a universal, a time-less concept. And not a function of your environment with things like cultural norms / mores. The only thing that is different is the structure of the culture may cause more triggering to occur, but the WHY behind the triggering is the same.
And this is why we can't have nice things for we have "tools" things like social media and so on that are tools that help enable this triggering to occur regardless of context, it sets up an environment where you feel entitled, where it is natural for you to feel offended and outraged.
