See, I never really associated Islam with all those Arabian Nights tales

Not only that, but the whole idea that Jasmine would be the sultan is laughable. We're talking about Islam, the "religion of peace" that brought us such gems as honor killings, female genital mutilation, the harem and the niqab. Oh wait, it's the sanitized version of Islam Disney wants us to believe existed in some magical land called Agrabah where an entire medieval Muslim populace would accept rule by a woman. After all, it's no longer a place where "they cut off your hand if they don't like your face".

I don't think of the setting as Islamic anymore than Beauty and the Beast, or the work of the Brothers Grimm is Christian. Influences from the culture, maybe, but no more OF Islam than all the Greco-Roman mythology depicted in the works of Catholic Renaissance artists. In fact, I found the change in the Prince Ali song, "Brush up your Sunday Salaam" to "Friday Salaam" to be kind of dumb. Sunday Salaam is the Genie mixing in anachronisms with the setting, like he does everywhere else in the movie. Friday Salaam makes it explicitly Islamic, which I think I'd find more insulting if I was a Muslim, because that would force me to look at the rest of the movie through an Islamic lens. I don't believe that was the intent, I believe it was some pedantic twit trying to "fix" a mistake by conflating Middle Eastern specifically with Islam. This isn't the real world, it's a fantasy one. We don't need to drag the specifics of real world religion into it. Islam in't a measuring stick for plausibility anymore than Catholicism is in "Game of Thrones".
I will note that the only reason I saw this movie at all was because I was in Florida with my girlfriend and it rained that day so we saw Aladdin and then Ma. Prior to those two movies all I saw in 2019 was Detective Pikachu with my kids.
