I have to say for both the Murphy and Marcone story arcs, I was surprised at first but then not really. For Murphy it was inevitable. For Marcone, obvious once you stop and think for a second.
But with all the worship of Murphy by the narrative, it was a pleasant surprise that he followed through (kind of like Egwene, also in hindsight). Likewise with Marcone. He's been sort of sanded down and presented as a good, if shady, ally, rather than a villain who needs to be dealt with. You could almost see some readers getting annoyed with Harry's insistence on giving Marcone shit and never cooperating with him for the greater good of the city unless it's absolutely necessary. Except now we know exactly what he is and where he stands. Either he's a puppet of the Denarians, or his own agenda and natural state of mind are sufficiently akin to theirs that they're okay with letting him drive.
What I find interesting is that Harry has had the real Shroud for a few months now and has not made any effort to follow through with Beckitt's daughter and try again to save her. It would be really creepy if he was holding that back for either leverage over Marcone or else to use to turn Beckitt against him.
