We agree that sometimes unfinished great work is better than finished, subpar work. Of course, neither Wheel of Time nor A Song of Ice and Fire is "great". When I think of great unfinished works, I think of Dead Souls or The Brothers Karamazov, which were supposed to be the first parts of a trilogy and a duology, respectively.
I guess I am based for I am not familiar with Dead Souls, but I agree with this
Yes
I like the last 2 books, for I adore the Baroque from time to time. But there is a point where this excessive detail is just masturbation. I feel Book 4 and 5 are good for you learn why the center can not hold and it is not a new phenomena but has happened dozens of times in ASOIAF's past but for slightly different reasons for Feudalism and its variants is a sucky system.
But I like the Baroque and I can appreciate peoples tolerance for it can be less than mine. A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons is no Sistine Chapel after-all And all of the excessive detail characteristic of the Baroque can be a symptom of insanity and not clarity, where you are ruled by your emotions but if everyone is ruled by their emotions it is a drunken frat party.
I wished the Martins books made you happy and I acknowledge your critique is valid!
