You don't have to do bad writing for the story to have certain aspects changed/updated, or to use your lingo, made more woke.
Game of Thrones is evidence enough not being woke can still fuck up a story. Same for the Hobbit trilogy. This show both sucks, and tries to update the books. There's no particular evidence of causation.
