Also they might be revealing more than they want to signal Cannoli Send a noteboard - 03/09/2022 08:45:12 PM

For instance, if you asked anyone to name the female characters in Wheel of Time with the worst tempers, nearly everyone would name Siuan Sanche, Aviendha and Nynaeve al'Meara. And they went out and cast black actresses for all three roles. Aviendha has not appeared on screen yet, but they have distinctly rendered the other two into inferior versions to their blue-eyed and suntanning book versions. Siuan shows little sign of the fisherman's daughter, whom Moiraine characterizes as unwilling to accept the destruction and death that are due to come. Instead of being the first character to expressly articulate to Moiraine that the White Tower is losing its grip on the world, she flips her shit at the suggestion of the same from Logain. She goes from refusing to believe that "the world will burn, no matter what we do" to hucking villagers at the Eye of the World, knowing that the wrong ones will die, just to identify the Dragon by process of literal elimination. The showrunners' clear "fave" Egwene denounced in the books the idea of an Amyrlin imposing a fourth Oath sworn on the Oath Rod for her personal convenience as an act of tyranny, even denouncing the Black Ajah hunters for being unwilling to risk their vital mission by not releasing their captive traitors from the Fourth Oath they have demanded. But Black Lesbian Siuan does it in the Hall, on a woman who has already sworn the Three Oaths and thus any promise she makes would be binding! Black Lesbian Siuan is a bully, a tyrant and clueless to how the world is changing.
Book Nynaeve is established at the outset of the series, well before we ever see her as a divisive person in Emond's Field who upsets some people with her manner, but whom even many of her critics recognize as competent, and who has a constituency with clout, making her a power. Some might not be happy with her barging in on a Village Council meeting, but the fact is, she can do so, with no repercussions and the one Councilor who complains is shut down by the Mayor in public and the most persuasive Councilor assigned to talk him around. When Tam is wounded in the Trolloc attack, Rand's overriding thought is get him to Nynaeve. Not to safety, not to the village not to medical treatment, but Nynaeve, personally. We can see from her approach to sanitation and triage that she knows what she is doing, medically, even if Rand lacks the frame of reference to say so on the page, and no matter what issues her weather sense has been experiencing (and it's all but outright stated that it's not Nynaeve that's wrong, but the weather). When she catches up with the Fellowship in Baerlon, Lan is impressed that she followed their trail, saying few could follow a trail he has worked to cover up. Then we see her woodcraft in action as she sneaks up on Lan and Moiraine's camp. Finally Lan comes to her to ask her help rescuing Perrin and Egwene, based on that same woodcraft.
On the show, we have Nynaeve tracking Lan played as a mystery he has to solve, treating her like she has somehow cheated. Then her being able to track Lan is brought up during an informal roast by his fellow warders, as something to mock him over. He took a header into a trough trying to tame a horse, and he got tracked by a GIRL! That Lan! What a goofball! And then in the season finale, Nynaeve confesses that she is not that awesome and badass, she did not track Lan at all, she just tracked Moiraine who "has a tell" clearly to force a plot point of Lan catching up to Moiraine and Rand, but not before the writers are ready for him to do so (if he could track them on his own, he'd have left long before). Never mind that when Nynaeve supposedly followed Moiraine's tell, she caught up to Lan after Moiraine had fallen unconscious, been carried into Shadar Logoth, then carried out again all the way to the place Nynaeve found them. She was following clues Moiraine was somehow leaving while comatose, because it is utterly impossible that Black Nynaeve could track the Inscrutable Samurai Lan. That's why the very notion has the Warders howling with laughter. But it's okay she came after them, because the village doesn't miss her. She is only shown in two failed attempts to help injured people during the Trolloc attack, and there is no sign of her authority or prestige in the village, aside from Moiraine saying "They tell me you are a leader" before going on to question why Black Nynaeve is scrubbing rocks around a "sacred" pool (so the pool is established as a place she knows well enough to use to ambush a Trolloc, duh; it's not like Black Nynaeve is a master woodsman who could hide from a Trolloc or lay an ambush any place she is not intimately familiar with). So maybe she's some sort of Priestess instead of Alt Mayor? Well isn't that a person you would expect to see presiding over a ritual for the dead with religious overtones? Nope. Black Nynaeve is doing her thing in private, away from everyone else. The innkeeper is the one who gets the speech kicking off the festivities and I suspect in the writers' minds, Egwene's Mom is the Mayor and not her Dad, hence the speech, when it could just as easily have been something to establish a character who will actually appear in more than one episode. But, nah. Black Nynaeve can just sit to one side smiling during parties. Book Nynaeve has such a presence that when she first shows up, it takes a while for Rand to realize his girlfriend is standing right there with her. On the show, Black Nynaeve is clearly an accessory in scenes featuring Egwene, whom the camera follows.

Can't WAIT to see how they are going to improve on Black Aviendha. Never mind that Black Loial has already explicitly identified pale, red-haired Rand's complexion as characteristic of Aiel, it turns out that there are also Black Aiel.

And isn't it cool that thanks to Oriental Min, Rand is going to have a complete racial set of girlfriends? If a man who is believably possessed of at least a normal level of testosterone wrote this show instead of Rafe Judkins (Wussy RJ from here on), someone might suspect them of creating a racial fetish harem. (For my own part, I find it rather suspect that someone like Wussy RJ has radically altered the Warder bond to compel sexual attraction to others bonded to the same person: he has created a scenario where hunky macho badass warriors explicitly have no choice but to sleep with men, no matter their sexual preferences; listening to ANY interview by Wussy RJ, it is hard to come up with any non-lascivious motivation)

I mentioned Black Loial. Black Loial does not get to do the cool stuff that Book Loial did, like explain ta'veren to the audience Rand, explain the Ways, have a plausible reason for staying at the same inn with Rand and Mat or joining the group, not get stabbed by a Shadar Logoth dagger or preserving a living memorial for the Green Man in the midst of the Blight. Black Perrin does not get to have his power as a wolfbrother established on-screen. He does not get to use common sense on his escape from Shadar Logoth, read the Whitecloaks who capture him and avoid digging the hole they were in deeper with a dumb lie, win a pissing contest with Aram, make a solid rational argument against the Way of the Leaf while at the same time grabbling with his own relationship with violence. He does not get to figure out that his offered escape opportunity is actually a setup for his murder. He is not seen bearing up in the Blight better than his fellow Two Rivers folk. Black Perrin is only there as a red herring for the identity of the Dragon Reborn, to provide a Shocking Moment by accidentally killing his wife, and to (badly) set up pretentious pseudo-philosophical blather from Ila (who has replaced her husband as Mahdi of the caravan). He is reduced to a chained up torture victim to motivate Egwene, who, as with Black Nynaeve, is the real focus of all their scenes together. Where Book Perrin argues (correctly) against Egwene using the Power that Broke the World to light a campfire on a grassy plain and demonstrates the radically different approaches the two characters have to force and power, Black Perrin is subserviently grateful for the fire, and the writers probably think they have fixed him by no longer having him challenge the whiter-featured woman.

Who else has been blackified? Well there are the loathesome, devoid of all redeeming qualities Padan Fain and Eamon Valda, one a Darkfriend and the other laughably incompetent and both rapists. Alanna's Warder, Ihvon. She has another warder, played by a white guy, but that's Maksim, who is named Owein in the books. The consistent one in both media is Ihvon. Does it matter that he's black? Probably not, except for the fact that Steppin's suicide is framed at least partly as avoiding being bonded by Alanna, where he explicitly cites his discomfort over being dragged against his will into a sexual relationship with, among others, Ihvon. Maybe Steppin thought a knife in the belly was less painful than trying to take Black Ihvon somewhere else.

Loathe as I am to presume such things of other people, I think we got some racists running this show.
