Gunn was fired by Disney in 2018.

First movie came out in 2014, second movie in 2017. During 2018 they were planning for the 3rd movie to come out in 2020 after Infinity War and Endgame.

So in 2018 Mike Cernovich, who is out there. People label Mike conservative but I would say that is a lie. He is an alt-right, manosphere, conspiracy theorist who became big due to gamergate and then started doing pizza gate and q conspiracy stuff involving pedophiles conspiracy.

Well in 2018 Mike said all these people (there were more than 1) made jokes “on Twitter” about rape and pedophiles and it was taken out of context. 1 of them James Gunn was a Disney employee while most of them were people in Media. The jokes were off color (I will argue extremely crass and unpleasant)but also taken out of context. Disney fired Gunn for they wanted to protect the family brand.

Well DC immediately hired Gunn, and the Guardians cast who were not under contract at the time said they were not going to make Guardians 3 without Gunn (was this due to solidarity or a chance to renegotiate contracts who knows?)

Well 9 months later in 2019 Gunn is rehired by Disney, after this Cernovich campaign was shown to be a bad faith thing. But since Gunn now has freedom and paying DC commitments it was not a fast priority to get Guardians 3 out as soon as possible. Since 2019 in the last year Gunn is now in charge of DC going forward.

Then 2020 with COVID happened, and also the Guardians cast is now all stars with Zoe Saladana doing Avatar stuff, Chris Pratt being a Chris, Vin Diesel being an action star (though his acting job is just voice), Dave Bautista is now an action star, etc, etc.

It was not a fast priority.
