I'm old enough to remember The Duke letting Lombardi and Landry get their head coaching opportunities with other teams due to misplaced loyalty. Over a decade of Allie Sherman and Alex Webster was the result.
Yeah, the Giants couldn't get out of their own way after the 50s glory years until Rozelle forced the Mara brothers to hire Young. But was George good or lucky? Every team in the league would have drafted Lawrence Taylor first overall except the one team that had the pick. And the Giants were 2nd. Would Young have had the same success if he didn't luck into Bum Phillips desire to have another Earl Campbell? Then he ruined his legacy by picking the execrable Ray Handley over Belichick when Parcells bolted.
Being a lifelong Giants fan is not without its challenges.
