Evidently, news of the gleeman had traveled quickly and such visits were rare in a village the size of Sarel. Serving maids walked between the tables, trying to find their way through the crowds however possible, while Master Jaemin tried to appease the crowd, reassuring them that certainly, the gleeman would be coming down soon.
Xanthe walked down the stairs pretty much unnoticed. Her features were fairly plain, and most of her beauty was in her youth, the unmemorable face serving her well in passing unnoticed from her targets. Or anybody, really. One might wonder if at times she wished she were noticed more, though.
The serving maids did not appear to be wearing any particular uniform aside from the white aprons they had tied around their waists, and Xanthe figured that after removing the wide hat she wore tied atop her head by her coloured scarf, and which clearly marked her as an Illianer, her own dress would suit just fine, if she could obtain one of those aprons.
As she thought on this, a hush fell over the crowd. The gleeman, Sammil Vatrek, had appeared atop the staircase, and the townsfolk were looking at him expectantly. Without warning, Sammil vaulted over the railing, landing agilely below, right beside one of the inn's two hearths. The fireplace was decorated with green branches, and a flames roared within to ward off the lingering winter chill. For a second, staring at that hearth, cold sweat ran down Xanthe's back, as they reminded her of her dream, and she looked away.
Sammil, on the other hand was staring into the flames, and reached his hands down, as though to warm himself. Descending into the common room as well, Maravin had a second to wonder what the man was doing, when suddenly the gleeman withdrew his hands, flames burning from his fingertips. The villagers gasped, and one of the Amadician soldiers nearest to Sammil hurried to his feet, ready to toss his drink in an attempt to extinguish the gleeman, but the Cairhienin man laughed, and gestured emphatically, his movements trailing red light in the dimly lit inn. "Let me tell you," he said, drawing a fiery circle around his face with his fingers, "about Old Wil and his pact with the Aes Sedai." His voice resounded in the small inn, making it feel like a booming hall in some castle. Everyone was now staring at him. It was a good choice of story for Amadicians, that one.
Laughing at the show, Maravin loudly - and rudely - ordered the largest jug of wine the inn could offer, a demand which was only belatedly acknowledged as the innkeeper, and even the cook, were staring at the gleeman in awe.
Sammil Vatrek has succeeded at a Perform Skill Check (14+8=22).
