I was somewhat perplexed by your choice of words when you said that they spent at most an hour a week learning. But I agree, your example in particular reminds me that although I was always dominating every French (French is my native language, not English) course I had, I still couldn't explain any of its rules of grammar.

But I do think that some regular formal study can help. Or maybe I'm just speaking from experience. Over the entirety of Elementary and Secondary School combined, I doubt I actively studied even one hour. It was a terrible habit to pick up though, and once I reached classes that actually required me to work outside of class, I was thoroughly unprepared for it.


Basic math, reading, and a few other things all require repetition and formal repetition to head off bad habits getting ingrained. Watching the history or discovery channel is every bit as good if not better then a lecture on the same subject.
