...that the thing he wanted more than anything was to walk again, and that's the trade he made with Smokey. Just like the trade Sayid made with Smokey was to have his love come back to life.

In that context, Desmond running him down makes sense. If he does end up not paralyzed after Jack operates, it will change everything.


But Locke made no deal with Smokey, he was knocked out in the crash and found himself not paralyzed anymore. He thought that a miracle and went spiritual, opening himself to "listen to the island". This sounds more like something Jacob might have pulled off (same for Rose?), or the else it's just the unplanned consequence of the special energy/power radiating from the island (which indeed may derive from the power "Smokey" being held there, but that's beside the point).


True, but when he first met Smokey in season one, he came out of that encounter feeling the "need" to do whatever it took for the island, which was actually Smokey's agenda. And when he didn't follow through, in the clearing with Boone, his legs quit working. So maybe Smokey originally healed him to let him know it was possible to walk again, and used it to coerce him later, kinda like a free starter from a drug pusher.
