But where was Ben?

I had forgotten about him in the excitement/angst of the episode, but yeah, he, Alpert and Miles were supposedly on a mission to blow up the plane, and then disappeared into the jungle. I wonder what they've been up to.

Another thing I thought of after last night's episode was why didn't Locke just let them get on the plane and let it explode? That wouldn't have been him killing them, it would have been Whitmore.

I think because Jack would have had no reason to get on the plane since he didn't want to go. Although it's difficult to imagine Locke planning Kate getting shot and Jack having to take her in the sub. I mean, he's good, but not that good.

And to bring a little humor to a sad and harrowing end of the episode, I can't think of a series on tv that has offered us more exploding humans than Lost has.
