Haven't loved a finale that much since BSG. Yes, I loved the BSG finale, and will adamantly defend it.
Honestly, it's possible that this surpassed it, though.
I felt a little thrill every time each person regained their memories, and was starting to put together the whole afterlife thing. Nothing really overwhelmed me until I saw the dog come and lay by Jack as he was dying. That just set the whole thing off for me. I cried like a baby, and right in front of my new girlfriend. Dammit.
The theme of flawed people finding redemption, or at the very least hope, was truly expressed in a beautiful way. Every one of these people did questionable and even terrible things. And each one of them, after a tortuous series of events, had their ultimate hope (really the ultimate hope of any human) fulfilled - to live beyond death and become a part of something greater.
Who cares about the numbers and immortality and who built the statue and all the little questions raised along the way. If they spent an entire season answering them, it wouldn't have been as satisfying as ending with the ultimate question: what happens after we die? Sure, the whole sideways world was a part of the afterlife, but the finale made it clear that it was just a stepping stone and that there are so many more mysteries to be revealed.
Loved it.
