...just looking for a purpose, wanting to get out in the world and spread the message after many years cloistered in the abbey.

And he found his place on the ship. He would probably have left eventually, when he felt he had accomplished what he set out to do. The very fact that when Serenity takes place, he is no longer on the ship speaks to this.
