There are a few episodes of Who that help explain an occasional Torchwood backstory, but only a couple.
it seems like they're wide open enough that the connection would have to be somewhat limited.
I just started watching Torchwood as well, and you know in the 2nd or third episode, the hand in the jar? Yeah.. that's
The Doctor's hand. You'd know that if you watch both, and you'd also know why it's important (won't spoil THAT).
But it's stuff like that, so far, that I've seen that connect the two - aside from Captain Jack himself.
