Almodovar? I like him in small doses. I haven't seen this one.

Definitely not watching that either.

Huh. I had a moment of confusion where I thought they were talking about the Clooney version. This might be interesting to see.

Yes. I've seen it, but I never fell in love with it. Maybe I was too young.

58 Persepolis (according to Empire, Iran, but that seems silly; just because the author is Iranian and the story is about Iran doesn't make the movie Iranian, as it was made in France by a largely French crew and no doubt with French money)

10 Spirited Away (Japan)


Lovely. This is the one I think of as Chihiro and the Witches, right? It is excellent. My favourite of his films, I think.

5 Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico, according to Empire, I'd have said Spain as it's shot there with Spanish actors even if the director is Mexican...)

In case anyone wants to know, I've seen a measly 17.


I've only seen 14, which means I should probably not comment, but I miss some films. There was a Czech/Russian film called "Kolya" or some such a few years ago that was very lovely. And the italian The Postman is more of a favourite of mine than Cinema Paradiso. That may just be me, though. I am of course mortally offended that there are two Swedish and two Danish films and not a single Norwegian one in the mix, but since I haven't seen three of those listed I should probably keep my complaining to a minimum.

I was a little surprised to not see "Un Homme et une femme" on the list. But that may just be my skewed worldview. And the Japanese "When the last sword is drawn", as well as (as Snoop pointed out) Zatoichi.
