I'm thinking you got it right the second time. Clover Send a noteboard - 25/04/2011 05:20:07 PM
...the scene was added to instead make the revelation of her evil all the worse when finally exposed - recall in the books, she aborted the one child she conceived by him. Is this an indication that her infanticide on the show is of a kind recognizable by ALL readers, and not just the pro-life crowd? Could they be taking extra care to rub her evil in the faces of an audience that of the books was too prone to falling into the PoV trap and accepting her rationalizations of her crimes at face value? Will they have the guts to make her so spiteful to her husband and obsessed with her brother than she would go so far as to actually poison a child of her flesh because he is Robert's and not Jaime's?

This. I don't think they want the audience to guess that the children are all products of incest just yet. When they do reveal it, they want the impact to be huge and not lessened by squabbling about the ethics of abortion. I anticipate a scene later in the series where she confesses to hating the sight of the infant because it resembled her husband, then killing him with Jaime's help.

It's a TV show, and they do things for shock value/ratings. I was quite annoyed about the changes they made to Dany's marital relations (rape instead of mutual enjoyment). This week, I (think I) figured out why they did it - it was because they wanted to include the handmaiden scene. Everyone loves lesbians, right? But it's not really essential to the book plot; here it was easier to justify due to Dany's clear lack of confidence and enjoyment.
