Elijah just ran away, right? Too fast for Bonnie to wham them? She should have moved to kill as soon as she saw Elijah hesitating, but I understand that it's a trigger that's difficult to pull, and in that split second, she hesitated and that cost them.
What leverage does Elijah have over Klaus now, to ensure he gets the answers he wants? How long will Klaus be weakened? It was an effective gamble by Klaus and there was no way Elijah couldn't go for it, but it's going to end badly for him.
I liked John Gilbert; when he last came back to the series, he was so intense & sexy. And an incredible resource - he really saved the day at the last moment. Also, where did he get the dagger? And how did the Gilbert journals have so much secret and useful information in them? Were witches operating in the open then, or just with Council's knowledge? The Council - that's another storyline that could have been much better explored, but it's been just tossed by the roadside in the show's mad rush forward.
I really want them to do stuff with Sheriff Forbes. She better not be killed next episode. Think about it from her perspective - she's utterly alone, surrounded by monsters, people she trusted, her family. And vampires are monsters. They are a public health menace. The best thing the Council did was 1) burn those 29 vampires, and 2) in last season's finale, kill them again. And now it's just her against them all.
Oh yeah, so - John Gilbert - if they had included him in the loop, everything might have gone much better. As it was, he only got a few minutes' warning and even in that time, managed to pull something that saved the day. We still don't know if he was working for Katherine at one point.
