I always thought Viserys to be mad in the books and on his way to becoming daddy. Add to that his sense of self entitlement and he was one really awful person in the books.

Dany on the other hand has always seemed to have a sense of innocence and empathy for others throughout her travels. I kind of pickup on that in the TV series. She seems interested, empathic and caring as well as a little naive.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
