I am not picking up any Martin book until the series is quite done, and even then I may not end up doing so -- it all depends on what I hear of it. But I would invest less emotionally or of my time in a television series, and so am willing to watch it before reading the book.

However, I am usually very opposed to people watching adaptations before reading the books. The question then becomes whether Martin's writing is so good important stuff is lost in the translation to screen which cannot then be recovered if I choose to read it later.

Any thoughts?

I have had to ask friends familiar with the book who various people are (especially 2 characters played by actors who look a lot alike really confused me...). But I am really enjoying the series.

My problem is that I'm pretty sure my enjoyment of the series, my desire to pick up on all those other little details, and my desire not to wait a year to find out what happens next are going to make me read the books now, rather than waiting until the series is finished (which is usually my rule). Plus I'm pretty sure my husband wants to read the books now too, and there's no way I won't read them once they're in my house. Damnit.
If you are from Betelgeuse, please have one of your Earth friends read what I've written before you respond. Or try concentrating harder.
