They changed or left out quite a few things from the book that I liked. Most of those changes seemed to sacrifice secondary character development without adding anything important to the flow of the movie.

There was nothing about Neville and Ginny's rebellious activities at Hogwarts during the year. The scene of Harry going to Ravenclaw tower and finding out about the diadem, the scene where Neville kills the snake, and the scene where Ron and Hermione finally kiss were all altered heavily, to little effect. Also, the fight between Voldemort and Kingsley, McGonagall, and Slughorn was missing. Another missing moment was that Harry did not repair his original wand with the Elder Wand.

I was going nuts thinking they were going to take away Neville's hero moment with Nagini. Part of me thinks they moved it just to freak out the readers, but really it fit better into the movie where they put it, but I was sure they were going to give it to Ron or Hermione when Harry spoke to them on the way out of the castle. I understand why they changed the kiss and showed them destroying the cup. The whole storyline with the house elves has been cut from the movies to that point and that was what precipitated the kiss in the books, so they really had to do something different in the movies or it wouldn't make any sense.
I did not like the way he handled the Elder Wand though. And I understand that they were trying to speed things along, but they took away a lot of Harry figuring things out, which kind of sucks because Harry got a lot smarter in this book.

Like most of these adaptations, the people doing the adapting seem to have missed the trees for the forest, capturing the broad strokes but not the little details that really bring the novels together. It was enjoyable enough, but it could have been better. I give it 3.5 stars.
