Super 6 *spoilers* Japhy Send a noteboard - 08/08/2011 11:21:50 PM
anybody else seen it? very spielbergy (producer). it's written and directed by jj abrams (the lost guy)

a bunch of kids filming an amateur movie witness a train crash. airforce comes in to clean up the pieces and it becomes very clear that something weird is going on but the airforce are trying to cover it up

people start going missing and electric are acting screwy. at first you seriously wouldn't be crazy for thinking it's the actions of the smoke monster from lost (it isn't...oh no spoiler!) and the whole film does seem very familiar. take some goonies style kids, immense "production values" (you'll get it if you've seen the film) add a splash of close encounters and e.t and you have super 8

i would recommend it, it's a good film with a good story with good funny characters that all act splendidly and a properly visceral train crash, the screeching tearing metal is brutal, but it will feel familiar to many of you. for a younger generation this will be their e.t

a super 8 out of 10 :approve:

I saw it a couple of months ago so most of my comments about the movie will be somewhat vague (see? vague already).

The reaction of the main character to every single situation just seemed odd and wrong. I know he has been going through a lot with the tragedy he experiences at the start of the movie but he feels far too detached the entire time. It's just simply not believable enough for me to have gotten invested in the film.

The train crash scene was great including the immediate aftermath. What bothered me most about this is again the main character's reaction to seeing the side door of a train car get thrown into the air and not think anything beyond that (we need to get out of here now things are going to blow up line of thinking would be appropriate).

The deal with the monsters eyes at the very end made me cringe. I won't say much else about it but everybody should know what I'm talking about.

Why did the army bring the cubes everywhere they go if they know what they do? Why all of them? Foolish.

Most of my dislike for the movie is simply from the writing. The visuals, the acting, the story were all really good and enjoyable but what I enjoy most about movies like this one are the development of characters. For most of the movie we just get this kid who is mostly unaffected by what's going on around him, numbed to the world. Still participates but when shit gets freaky he's far too calm and doesn't freak out even a little. When the credits rolled my first comment to the friend I went with was, "it would have been a better movie if Spielberg directed or wrote it instead of Abrams."

6 out of 10. A lot of potential but not a movie I'd recommended to anybody or ever watch again.
