He's the most like I would be in such a survival circumstance.
I'm pretty sure the zombies in the barn are Hershel's family and farmhands. He believes that either God or Science (or both) will cure the "disease," so he has them cooped up in faith.
Now the question I have is this: What happens from here? If the whole thing goes crazy and Hershel is killed, why don't our vagabonds just set up here forever? Then the show is basically over. I guess we have to assume the barn zombies will get out and kill some people (likely Hershel included) and then everyone will have to leave the farm together to escape.
I just hope the brown-haired girl goes (forget her name) since she's the only hot chick on the show so far.

I figured it must be farmhands and such but I have no idea what he expects with them. I'm so excited to see the farm get ripped apart from those walkers though. You know they're getting out and reeking havoc at least.
