Just because Watson isn't as smart as Holmes doesn't make him an idiot. He's an intelligent medical doctor with military experience who can carry himself in a fight if he has to. Any depiction of him as less than competent doesn't do the character justice. Holmes doesn't hang around with him just to have someone to listen to his brilliant revelations.
