Apart from my not having seen Casablanca, I couldn't agree more.

Don't get me wrong I like ROTK, but let's be honest, it is the weakest of the LotR films and only won best picture because the academy felt the need to honour the LotR films and failed to give the oscar to FotR, which was the LotR film which deserved it.
Thank you. You would think this would be blindingly obvious, but apparently it bears repeating. I can see a half-hearted case for TTT being as good as FotR on account of it being based on such a hard book to make a movie out of, but RotK was the weakest of the three by a mile.
Return of the King doesn't even come close to the brilliance of Casablanca. In terms of story, dialogue, acting Casablanca is better. Return of the King doesn't even make sense as a standalone film and since we are not comparing all of the Lord of the Rings films against Casablanca, we must judge Return of the King as a standalone film. In which case it is over long (particularly the endings) is a mess structurally and has poor character development.
I actually liked the endings better than much of the rest, and as I said still haven't seen Casablanca, but yes.
Return of the King beat Casablanca?
