I found it out of character for him; that's why it felt forced to me.
That is true, now that I think about it. I definitely thought that he went for the "hurt and angry" much too quickly. I can see why the writers thought that was appropriate, but the whole thing just didn't feel ... right. Especially when he talked to himself in the room.
Beckett's response seems natural, though - the kind of "stupid crap" that, as you say, real people do all the time.
