I found it out of character for him; that's why it felt forced to me.

That is true, now that I think about it. I definitely thought that he went for the "hurt and angry" much too quickly. I can see why the writers thought that was appropriate, but the whole thing just didn't feel ... right. Especially when he talked to himself in the room. :P

Beckett's response seems natural, though - the kind of "stupid crap" that, as you say, real people do all the time.
