The idea that Hawking is not a genius is ridiculous but yes he wouldn't have known him and Hawking isn't as much of a known name outside of science (though he should be) the idea that he isn't in the top twenty living physicists comes from jealously though I can't think of any physicist I would say is better..and I'm a chemist so I am somewhat plugged into that world.
