I thought the disparate power levels were unintentionally hilarious (spoilers)

"Iron Man! You set up a perimeter around the entire island of Manhattan!"
"Thor! You channel the destructive power of the elements to single-handedly hold back an invading force!"
"Hulk! You go take down enemy dragon things with your bare hands!"
"Captain America and Black Widow! Um... you can just sort of stand on the ground and kill a few guys, I guess?"
Like, I appreciate that they tried to give them something to do (Cap helping to save civilians, Black Widow shutting down the portal), but it's still funny, to the point where I honestly expected the fact that Loki's staff was on the ground a few floors down was going to become a plot point!
"Argh, if only I could fly! IRON MAN! Quick, can you come get that for me?"
___
Yeah, the fact that everyone was using pistols was kind of ridiculous. Black Widow and Nick Fury both had these tiny little pea shooters that I don't think really accomplished anything in the entire movie.
Hawkeye (did they ever actually call him that in the movie?) did some good damage at the end, but you're right, a good rifle could have done as much.

I amuse myself.
I'm pleased to report The Avengers offered both entertainment AND justification (spoilers seperated)

The Heli-Carrier is well established in the Marvel Universe as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base of operations.

Yup, they couldn't get away with not having the Heli-Carrier.

Hawkeye does basically state as much to Black Widow. They're made for a spy movie.
