I think you're dead on. Basically once he embraces the Hulk they can act together. The Hulk is a bit smarter now/a better teammate, but he can also act on his frustrations still, like by punching Thor during the battle (hilarious). Basically, Banner realizes the Hulk isn't just some rage monster. It's him, and it's always there. He just has to become it.
