Cumberbatch, despite the cumbersome name, is pretty awesome, and add Carlyle to the mix, just wow.
State of Play was pretty damned impressive.
Will look into the Dickens adaptations too, got any suggestions on which are best? (I hate to admit, I've read very little of his stuff, so I wouldn't know which to start with).
Although I do love my genre stuff (F/SF) I do also like period pieces, and also enjoyed the Sharpe series (only seen the first 3 or 4 of them though).
About the only things I am NOT a fan of on television are sitcoms (although I do remember watching some Spaced at a friends and really enjoying it), soap operas (as in the BS stuff we have on daytime television here in the States), and reality tv (bah!!!!). Oh, and sports, which I see as a major waste of time and electricity.
I can't think of any fantasy sci-fi series which haven't already been mentioned, but if you ever feel like a realist turn, then I recommend the BRITISH State of Play, and possibly The Last Enemy (and of course Sherlock if you haven't seen it yet).
And if you can handle costume dramas, there are some excellent Dickens adaptations which are about twice as long as average British series.

Since to an American audience, most British shows seem almost like mini-series anyways (this is NOT a judgement call, just a recognition of how short a "season" British shows tend to be, even if there is a following series of 6-8 episodes).
