I haven't read the books, and the whole ending was quite a confusing sequence.

The wildfire was great, but the battles that followed didn't seem very epic. It looked like there were only a few dozen men on each side, and the progression of the battle was confusing. First you have a small scale battle, then Tyrion attacks from behind and wipes out the first force in approximately ten seconds. Then a larger force attacks form about ten feet away, where they'd apparently just been hanging out. Tyrion is attacked for no reason by a guy on his side, receiving a cut that looks minor and doesn't even bleed much but is made out to be a nearly mortal wound, for some reason. Then Tyrell shows up to save the day, then Tywin pops into the throne room to announce victory.
I've read the books years ago, but I was still confused how that all came about.
'I think they simply ran out of time to tell the ending effectively :/

The final version of the episode was apparently significantly rewritten by the producers.

Yeah, but he didn't even come into the equation in the books. He was a mere playing piece
